Navigation is an essential skill for any outdoor activity. It forms the basis of a safe day out in the hills and adds enjoyment and interest. Towards Adventure run navigation courses for a range of activities. For those wishing to seek a recognised award Towards Adventure is a registered centre for the National Navigation Award Scheme we offer the Bronze and Silver awards.

We can offer tailor made courses at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, these can be half day, full days or multi day courses depending on your requirements. Courses are for individuals or small groups, so that you can focus on learning. Below is a list of elements that you may wish to consider:

National Navigation Award Scheme

This scheme has been developed to allow people of all ages learn navigation to set levels. The emphasis is on being able to plan and carry out safe routes with competence. We feel that this scheme is appropriate for any outdoor user looking to improve their navigation skills.

Courses are usually based over two days however evening courses can be arranged during the summer months. Courses include both indoor theory and outdoor practice. All courses are £90 per person and include a certificate and badge upon successful completion of the course. Courses can be run for up to 6 people.

Bronze Award
Basic map and compass skills, getting you used to translating features from map to ground and being able to competently navigate on paths and tracks around the countryside.

Silver Award
A more advanced course providing techniques for more open country, judging distance, interpreting contour lines, and good use of compass. This award will allow you to plan and carry out walks away from paths and tracks.
